First Golf Balls lost in the gorst and heather

After we were checked in to the hotel we played our first round of golf in Scotland at the Irvine Golf Club.
The weather was great - but came with 20 mile an hour winds. Fairways that looked wide seemed to narrow as I watched shot after shot get pushed 50 yards right into what at first looked like pretty heather and wavy grass. Shortly after spending 5 minutes hunting in vain for my ball, I realized "this is not like Jefferson Park".
Great course though -- opened in 1889. Killer moonscape of bunkers and humps and bumps on many holes, lots of blind tee shots with a strong wind made for many numbers like 7 on my scorecard for each hole. I'll post some pictures later today of our adventures.
We're off to play 36 holes in the town Troon a bit down the coast from Irvine.

We also found an awesome pub on the harbour here last night, the Ship's Inn, that was opened in 1569 and we tried a few varieties of whisky that you don't ever see in the states. We're going back for dinner after the golf tonight.
More to come!
